Fuel Cranes for Locomotive Fueling

Infiltek supplies Snyder fuel cranes for rail fueling tracks, engine houses and shop fueling positions. The crane carries the fuel line out over the locomotive on a counterbalanced swing arm, so the operator can bring the nozzle to the fill point in seconds and swing the arm back clear of the track between locomotives. Keeping the hose supported and off the ballast speeds up the fueling cycle, cuts hose damage and removes the heavy manual handling that comes with high-flow diesel delivery.

Design

  • Pedestal or column mounting on a fueling platform, pad or pit edge
  • Counterbalanced swing arm that carries the hose weight and returns to a parked position
  • Vertical riser with swivel joints for smooth rotation under pressure
  • Integral step or access platform for reaching elevated fill points
  • Isolation and control valving at the base of the unit
  • High-flow hose and locomotive fueling nozzle sized to your fill rate

Configurations

Cranes are available in manual and assisted arrangements, with the model selected by the reach, hose size and lift assistance your fueling position needs. Reach, riser height, swing range, mounting detail and the parked position are specified to suit your track centres, platform layout and the locomotives you fuel. Send us your layout and we will confirm the right configuration and part numbers.

Built for Rail Service

  • Heavy-duty steel construction and coatings for outdoor, year-round service
  • Swivels and seals selected for diesel and biodiesel blends
  • Grounding and bonding provisions
  • Spare parts and seal kits available for the life of the equipment

The Rest of the Fueling Position

A fuel crane is one part of a locomotive fueling facility. Infiltek also builds skid-mounted diesel filtration and pumping systems, loading arms for railcars and tank trucks, filter vessels and basket strainers to keep locomotive fuel clean, and the ASME pressure vessels that go with them. See our rail and truck tank refueling page for the full picture.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a locomotive fuel crane?

A fuel crane is a pedestal-mounted fueling arm used at locomotive fueling tracks. The counterbalanced swing arm carries the fuel line out over the locomotive so the operator can reach the fill point quickly, then swings clear of the track when fueling is finished.

Why use a fuel crane instead of a hose reel?

A crane supports the weight of the hose and nozzle, keeps the fuel line off the ballast and out of the fouling zone, speeds up the fueling cycle and reduces the handling injuries and hose damage that come with dragging a heavy high-flow hose along the track.

Can cranes be configured for our track layout?

Yes. Reach, riser height, pedestal mounting, swing range, hose and nozzle selection and the parked position are all specified to suit your track centres, platform or pit layout and the locomotives you fuel.

What else does Infiltek supply for rail fueling?

We build skid-mounted diesel filtration and pumping systems, loading arms for railcars and tank trucks, and the filter vessels and strainers that keep locomotive fuel clean, all in our Mississauga shop.
